ServiceMagic Q1 2011 Home Remodeling & Repair Index
ServiceMagic’s 2011 first quarter home improvement data and nationwide survey results show that homeowner remodeling activity remains down while discretionary spending on convenience and maintenance services continue to make gains. The survey also revealed that less than a quarter of service professionals in the home improvement industry utilize a company Facebook fan page and around 5 percent are using Twitter to market their business. Below are highlights from the data which is compiled from 1.3 million service requests received through ServiceMagic’s online marketplace from January to March of this year, as well as results from a survey of homeowners and service professionals conducted in April.
Survey Highlights
Convenience Services:
Service requests for convenience services increased for the fourth consecutive quarter. Homeowners overwhelmingly indicated that their motivation to hire convenience service professionals was because they have less time to do these services themselves.
Additions & Remodels:
Demand for additions and remodeling service requests has decreased for the third consecutive quarter. However, bathroom remodel service requests have increased this quarter, while kitchens have steadied out after their sharp decline in Q3 2010.
Social Media:
Less than a quarter of service professional in the ServiceMagic network utilize a company Facebook page. The majority of these service professionals are using Facebook to share company news or to showcase their portfolio and customer testimonials.
